Belarus & Russia sanctioned by UCI, & what it means

Since yesterday, Russia has been formally sanctioned, at the highest levels by the UCI. Russia can’t compete. Events in Russia have been cancelled.

That sends a strong message. The UCI – the Union Cyclisme Internationale – is the world governing body for cycling. They supervise the pro races and write lots of boring rules. They also have the final say on our values.

There is no doubt about it. The cycling world – from pro teams to small, independent mechanics like me – we stand together with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. They are the victims of an unprovoked, evil attack.

The UCI’s decision means that Russia’s national team have been suspended, along with Belarus and several clubs. For example, Gazprom-Rusvelo were due to race today in Liguria. That didn’t happen. They would have had to re-register outside Russia, and remove Gazprom as a sponsor.

Russian government and the prestige is punished; but Russian cyclists themselves aren’t responsible. Belarus was sanctioned for supporting Russia. The UCI should have been faster. At first, they only criticised Russia, instead of formal bans.

Ukraine done a lot for cycling, like mass production of utility bikes in Kharkiv. We need Ukraine intact.
